From famine to pandemics to terrorism, the United Nations is the most important global platform for deliberation and decision-making to solve the world’s most important challenges.

Vaccine equity is of paramount importance in this regard.

We have vaccinated95% of all school children, and 85% of all residents in the Maldives. Schools have resumed. Businesses have restarted. Our borders have been reopened, opening the doors to our resorts.

Namely, that in today’s world, we are bound together. We must work together, in solidarity, in unity, to achieve our ambitions together.

But let’s be frank. Today’s multilateral system is too limited in its instruments and capacities,in relation to what is needed for effective governance of managing global public goods.

On the one hand, we see the vaccines developed in record time —a victory of science and human ingenuity. On the other hand, we see that triumph undone by the tragedy of a lack of political will, selfishness and mistrust. A surplus in some countries. Empty shelves in others. A majority of the wealthier world vaccinated. Over 90 percent of Africansstill waitingfor their first dose.

As such we endorse the G7 Compact on Research Collaboration and its commitment to: support policies, legal frameworks and programmes to promote research collaboration; promote sharing of research data; explore enhancements to research assessment and rewards for collaboration and knowledge sharing; and develop a common set of principles which will help protect research and innovation ecosystem across the G7 to open and reciprocal research collaboration.
