UN peace operations play a key rolethroughout the world. Norway is astrongsupporter of the Secretary-General’s Action for Peacekeeping initiative.This includes financial support to enhance the capacity of UN peace operationsto carry out their mandate. Especially their mandate to facilitate political processes, protect civilians and implement the women, peace, and security agenda.

We seeemerging military, political, and security-relatedissues, increasing number of armed conflicts associated to religion, cultural difference, economic competition and globalization, growing flow of refugees as well as environmental degradation.Accordingly, the UN political andpeacekeepingoperationspolicy,its type and scope have been modified. We supportefforts to increase peacekeepers’ role and changein the requirement for them as well as the desire totake immediate action with a compactforce equipped with modernweapons, equipment and facilitiesin linewith the relevantmission’s operational situation.Since 2002Mongolia has deployed nearly 20thousandBlue Helmets to 13 UN peacekeeping operations in threedifferent continents andrankshighin the world in terms ofper capita deployment of peacekeepers and number of military personnel.In the future, Mongolia aimsto increaseitsparticipationin the UN peacekeeping operationsandis preparing to deploy Quick Reaction Force Company, Construction Engineering Company, and Level Two Hospital to the UN missions.Moreover, Mongolia pursues a policy to increase percentage of women peacekeepersto 15 percent in accordance with the UN Security Council Resolution on Women, Peace and Security.In that regard, Mongolia will host an international conference onparticipation of femalepeacekeepersin the UN PKOs next year in Ulaanbaatar. We call on the Department of Peace Operations and Member Statestosupportand cooperatein organizingthis conference.

Furthermore, I would like to emphasize the facts thatwe have been actively participatingin the UN peacekeeping operations since 2002, the period of 2003-2012was proclaimed as the UNLiteracy Decadeat the initiativeof Mongoliaand the International Think-Tank, the first ever intergovernmental body for Landlocked Developing Countries,has been established in Ulaanbaatar.
