    1. We need strong regulatory frameworks to change this business model.

SG could have used the opportunity to call on governments to speed up and beef up action (even if lobbying for status quo or minimal action is too strong)

    2. The business models of social media companies profit from algorithms that prioritize addiction, outrage and anxiety at the cost of public safety.

Another tough criticism directed at social media companies and their algorithms

    3. Global Digital Compact as part of the Summit of the Future in 2023. The Compact will bring together governments, the private sector and civil society to agree on key principles underpinning global digital cooperation. This will reinforce the ongoing coordinated approach on cyber security to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure. And I’ve proposed a Global Code of Conduct to end the infodemic and the war on science, and promote integrity in public information, including online.

Urging action leading up to a Global Digital Compact. A sort of social contract. SG is trying hard, but he needs governments to act.

    4. Our personal information is being exploited to control or manipulate us, change our behaviors, violate our human rights, and undermine democratic institutions.   Our choices are taken away from us without us even knowing it.

Very strong criticism directed towards tech companies

    5. I want to begin the year by raising five alarms -- on COVID-19, global finance, climate action, lawlessness in cyber space, and peace and security.

cyberspace is lawless, and is one of the 5 alarms sounded by UN SG

    1. Then Brundtland Report provided a deceptively simple definition of sustainability: "meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs." The official U.N. definition of sustainability has 3 dimensions, or 3 pillars, also known as the "Three Es" of sustainability. These are environmental protection, economic development, and social equity (figure 1).

Key pillars of rights of future generations

    2. Sustainability ethics have grown out of environmental ethics. The World Commission on Economic Development brought the idea of sustainability to the global stage in 1987. The United Nations sponsored this study of the relationship between economic development and the environment, published as "Our Common Future," also known as "The Brundtland Report."

We must meet this moment witha new UN ––a new energy, new resources, and new bonds of trust with the people this institution serves. AnewUN that enlists the dynamism of youngpeople, because our action ––and inaction ––directly affects their future.

The support of UN Member States for Belize’s territorial integrity and respect for our right to self-determination was critical to the achievement of Belize’s independence. 1.

'Despite calls for a global ceasefire that would allow us to focus all our energy on planetary emergencies, the pandemic and the climate, and the full realization of human rights, conflicts persist. They are the result of tensions between states and within societies which reflect a deep crisis of confidence. In this context, our Secretary-General's proposal to craft a new social contract anchored in human rights and shape a new agenda for peace is relevant. Luxembourg is ready to contribute to these efforts aimed at restoring confidence, while also ensuring respect for international law. Without this, there can be no lasting peace.'

'Our Secretary General, Antonio Guterres is calling us to do so. I thank him for his action and I renew my sincere congratulations and best wishes for his second term at the head of our Organization. In the report he has just presented, "Our Common Agenda", the Secretary-General puts us in front of our responsibilities. I agree with him when he says that "we are at a turning point in history". The warning rings true under the current circumstances. We must make the choice to act, the choice of the salutary start leading to a better, greener and more secure future. A founding member of the United Nations, Luxembourg has long been committed to multilateralism and to an international order based on the rule of law. Today, my country stands ready to respond to the Secretary-General's call for a stronger, more effective, more inclusive multilateral system, working more in a network. Only in this way can we ensure peace and security, sustainable development in all its aspects, including health, respect for the rule of law and human rights.'
