    1. America is a platform like Microsoft’s Windows and Android, Google’s mobile operating system. These mix aspects of open and closed systems, allowing others to develop applications for their platform, but also closely control it. America combines monopolies and a strongish state with lots of competition. Mainly thanks to this profitable amalgam, the country has given rise to most of the world’s leading tech firms. China is more like Apple and Oracle, which combine being closed with lots of internal competition. The European Union is best compared to an open-source project such as Linux, which needs complex rules to work. India, Japan, Britain, Taiwan and South Korea all run differently and have technology bases to match.

Vertic, a leading global independent digital agency has today advocated for an 18th SDG to be created: A Meaningful and Safe Digital Life.  More than 4.5 billion people now use the internet and over 3.8 billion are active on social media,   Data shows the average internet user now spends 6 hours and 42 minutes online each day, which equates to more than 100 days of connected time per internet user per year, or roughly 40 percent of our waking lives.

is this enough if the majority of individuals don't trust financial institutions?

    2. ensuring adequate consumer protection mechanisms and enhanced supervisory practices will contribute to reducing fraud and building trust.

should come first rather than citizen awareness

    3. In particular, empowering developing nations to have a say in the governance of global digital financing platforms originating from outside of their jurisdiction will help mitigate adverse effects of such platforms, such as data monopolization.

how would they empower developing countries?

    4. Recommendations Address the Barriers

the reocommendations on the barriers and risks lack the How? i.e. concrete action. They are rather general/vague. To fill 'this gap' they provided the pathway initatives but they're hardly the answer to all challenges and barriers.

    5. Digitalization can help citizens in directing the use of their money more effectively to realize their financial and non-financial goals

They tackle money laundering and fraud as consequences of digital transformation later on, but I wouldn't say that "digitalization of finance is essential in the fight". It has even made it more complicated to trace back and has speeded up transactions.

      provision of ready made tools

    5. This has played out in the recent rush to form global AI ethics guidelines: developing countries in Africa, Latin America, and Central Asia have been largely left out of the discussions, which has led some to refuse to participate in international data flow agreements.

interesting point for Road to Bern initiative and work on data principles/values

    6. Cambridge Analytica, for example, beta-tested its algorithms on the 2015 Nigerian and 2017 Kenyan elections before using them in the US and UK. Studies later found that these experiments actively disrupted the Kenyan election process and eroded social cohesion.

can apply the same logic to the non-digital field (e.g. vaccines)

    7. Ghost work. The phenomenon of ghost work, the invisible data labor required to support AI innovation, neatly extends the historical economic relationship between colonizer and colonized. Many former US and UK colonies—the Philippines, Kenya, and India—have become ghost-working hubs for US and UK companies.
